My practice explores the intersection between drawing and painting, investigating how a graphical sensibility can interact within the world of abstraction. Capturing a sense of life and energy in the interaction between marks and shapes is a vital part of my painting practice.
In recent work I have been investigating how the rural landscape of Cumbria can provide a set of visual motifs to respond to within my paintings, connecting the dramatic scenery of the area with the language of abstraction. Texture plays a crucial role in enlivening the surface of my current work, where heavily worked-over areas may rub up against smooth and precise sections, creating a tension in the final piece.
