Jill Davis was born in West Cumbria and has lived for many years in Irton, a small village at the foot of the Wasdale valley. She gained a Master’s Degree in Contemporary Fine Art at the University of Cumbria in 2010.
Her subject is the familiar local landscape, not necessarily the dramatic mountain views, but the farms, houses, bridges and narrow twisting roads which she sees every day. Sketching outside, she works her ideas into paintings and prints focusing on the graphic quality of each view. She exhibits regularly in local art events and some of her work is on permanent display at a Cockermouth Gallery.
Over the last few years, she has become increasingly interested in printmaking and is a founding member and now vice chairman of Cumbria Printmakers. Most of her prints are produced from simple key blocks cut in lino or wood and printed with additional colour blocks or with colour added using the colle chine technique. Her prints have been recently displayed at The Great Print Exhibition at Rheged and in the latest Cumbria Printmaker’s exhibition at The Theatre by the Lake in Keswick.
