Maria works on location, taking sketches in charcoal, pencil, oil or watercolour and then moves to the studio to complete the piece. Her paintings are part observation, memory, intrigue and awe and the end result – where studies, sketches, experience and occasionally reference to photographs combine, is an emotive reaction tot he atmosphere of a place. Through the ambiguity of certain mark making, the viewer is invited to complete the story and nothing is more of a privilege than when this connection is made.
In 2016 Maria was honoured with the ‘People’s Choice’ accolade in the “2016 Cumbrian Artist Showcase awards” and, during 2017, continues her studies under Martin Kinnear at the Norfolk School of Painting, the UK’s leading oil painting academy, having previously studied under tutors at the Glasgow School of Art and Higham Hall.
