I am a self taught painter with a background in graphic design that influences and informs the composition of my paintings. My art is a way of capturing the beauty of the world around us in my own vision, breathing new life into traditional subjects such as landscapes and the natural world by incorporating contemporary tools and techniques. I have been inspired by the street art I have seen when traveling; bringing that feeling of freedom and spontaneity into my artwork by using spray paint, pallet knives and paint rollers. I love the idea that over time street art is covered up and is in a constant state of change, nothing is permanent. Within my own work I often cover one painting with another until I am happy with the balance of colour and shape. Although some of my paintings are relatively abstract they are always influenced by places, photographs and people, bringing a reality to the piece that I hope the viewer can connect with.
My paintings are an expression of feelings about the subject through the use of colour and composition. Landscapes are often influenced by somewhere I have been, when I combine the use of photographs with my feelings and memories of the place. Often the whole process will occur on one canvas or wooden panel, from initial sketches and colour study through to the final piece. The build up of colour line and form creates the atmosphere of the piece. Spray paint, acrylic paint and oil pastel are my most used mediums, as they are very free and liberating, allowing me to mould the composition of the piece as I work.
