Description

My paintings are concerned with expressing complex states of mind through visual metaphor. My work often focusses on the human head as the locality of these complexes and I explore how positioning and forcing interactions between 2D and 3D elements creates new meaning and subtle insinuation. I am especially interested in ephemeral elements such as light, liquid and fragments and enjoy playing around to create compositions that somehow convey a deeper emotion and response than with the separated elements alone. My work is informed by an interest in psychoanalytical study and the different realms of being as defined by the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan – the Symbolic (words and language), the Imaginary (self-image) and the Real (the existence of objects outside of human interaction). I enjoy the processes behind the creation of symbolic meaning as well as awareness of what lies outside of it.
