Sue Kane was born in Cumbria, and attended Whitehaven Grammar School. After studying Art in Lancaster, she returned to the county to set up home and has been self-employed for 30 years, firstly as a jeweller and, in recent years, as a photographer based in the Art By Camera Studio.
“The images I sell have been drawn from a collection of daily photographs taken over eight years. My love of flowers, both wild and cultivated, means the feature heavily. In my daily quest for an interesting subject I take the camera into the garden all year round, observing the changing seasons. I take advantage of bought flowers as well. From these images I produce greetings cards.
Because I live in such a beautiful area, I have my camera with me wherever I go, catching the first rays of sunlight over a mountain top, mist in the valley or the sparkle on water in a lake. The best of these shots I mount and set in hand-made, hardwood frames made especially for me, occasionally I help with the manufacture.”
When not running Digital Photography Courses Sue, and business partner, Richard Harrison, use the studio for portraiture.
“Landscapes can be stunning, flowers are extremely beautiful but I find it so thrilling to photograph people! There is something especially rewarding about the interaction of client and photographer. Sharing their delight as they are shown the captured images and working with them to create a portfolio.
In all subjects of my work I like to take the image a step further, when appropriate to add a further artistic dimension to the skill of taking the photograph. That comes in the field of editing. Editing gives the freedom I had when I painted, the ability to express the nature of the subject, such as the way the delicate stems of poppies allow them to sway in the breeze.”
Sue and Richard welcome visitors to their studio but an appointment is necessary outside C-Art opening times.
