This selected exhibition featured incredible contemporary art of the highest quality that is fast becoming a benchmark for aspiring Cumbrian artists.
Featuring an eclectic mix of artworks working across all media from traditional painting and sculpture to contemporary video installation and photography, with a number of guest artists joining the submitted entries. The exhibition has seen over 40,000 visitors over the last two years.
The Cumbrian Artist of the Year Award was shortlisted and selected by the chosen Young Curators. The joint winners of the 2017 award were Celia Burbush and Brian Shields. The People’s Choice was selected by visitors to the exhibition and the winner of the 2017 award was Malcolm Wilson. Both of the awards attract a £500 prize. Previous winners include Sarah Tew, Karen Babayan, Alan Stones and Jonathan Trotman.
An innovative and progressive format set by Eden Arts encourages and offers opportunity for the vitality and talent of the county’s youth to be developed by giving ‘Young Curators’ aged 16 – 24 not only the chance to select the work but to be involved in all aspects of planning, writing and installing the exhibition with professional assistance, each year with the support of prestigious curators. In 2017 the Young Curators have been working with curators from CCA in Glasgow and Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool.
