Honister Slate Mine
Honister Slate Mine, Borrowdale Valley, Keswick, CA12 5XN
As part of a significant art installation here at Honister slate mine, the final sculpture of a set of three is to be launched on 8th September 2017, produced by sculptor Terry Hawkins from @lovingslate and times to coincide with the start of the C-Art festival, this latest sculpture will be joining two already in place where they are to stand forlornly on the remains of the bridge head at Honister pass. On one side mother and child, and on the other side father. Their position, separated by the bridge mourns the literal loss of the bridge but also the many lives lost and families decimated during the long history of slate mining at Honister. However, the ball hammerhead, traditional tool of the slate worker, represents the strength and resilience of the slate mining community in the face of tragedy.
