This year’s Highlights Contemporary Craft Tour is entitled Luminosity and it looks at light – reflections, images and installations – through contemporary craftwork. Pieces by seven very different artists and craftspeople will be touring the north of England, starting in September at The Old Courthouse in Shap.
“Luminosity is all about celebrating light,” says Highlights Craft Tour Officer, Karen Babayan, “and the touring exhibition will include glass, sculptural textiles, film, electronics and neon installations. Five of the participating artists and designer makers are based in the north of England themselves and they’re joined by Statira Jazayeri, a Swedish artist with Iranian roots, and Evagelia Hagikala who is originally from Greece.”
Luminosity opens at The Old Courthouse on Friday 15 September to coincide with the C-Art festival across Cumbria. There will be demonstrations by Statira throughout Friday 15 September 10-4pm, an artist’s talk at 4.30pm with refreshments following. There’s also an excellent opportunity to meet and work with innovative textile artist Statira and her unusual approach to woven textiles. A Masterclass workshop in Sculptural Textiles on Saturday 16 September 10am-4pm is £40 and explores sculpting woven fabric freely by hand and/or folding it with help from moulds into geometrical shapes. Participants will explore how different materials behave when being forced into shapes, for example fabrics with metallic and plastic threads. There will be a small loom that the participants can take turns to try out the process of weaving with these unusual materials. There will also be printed photos and textile samples to look at for inspiration and to help visualize resulting work. On Sunday 17 September there will be a family drop-in workshop 10-4pm and a Makers Market across the street at Shap Memorial Hall 11-4.30pm. The exhibition is also open every day in the following week until Saturday 23 September. Statira is based in Gothenburg, Sweden.
